Most people focus on the running part of the Bridge Run, but I am all about the eating and drinking afterwards (shocker)! This will be my 6th year doing the Bridge Run and I use it as my yearly fitness test to make sure I can still do it. When I first ran it, I was still in running shape from cross country/track in high school, so every year it gets more difficult. Luckily for me, the support that Charleston gives to the bridge runners is enough to get me to do it every year. Hundreds of volunteers pass out water, businesses open earlier than normal, and the whole city is just one big celebration!
The first couple years I ran I wasn’t old enough to partake in the drinking activities, but as soon as I could, it only increased my motivation to keep doing it! You would think that after a healthy activity like the Bridge Run people would cling to smoothies, but us Charlestonians use it as an excuse to drink more and well, that’s why I live here!
The first year I could legally go out after the Bridge Run, I took my talents to Bay Street Biergarten. They are known for their massive brunch parties, so I figured it was the place to be after the Bridge Run. Complete with a Bloody Mary bar and giant mimosas, you can’t go wrong! This year they will have tons of drink specials as well as HyLO fitness and Fleet Feet pop ups.
Last year I stuck to King Street and visited Uptown Social on one of the first days they were open! This year they will be throwing a Bridge Run Bash complete with live music and they will also be doing the Final Four games! If the weather holds up, their roof is a great place to day drink post-bridge run. Also, you HAVE to try their pizza dough bites, they are the cheesy secret to bridge run recovery!
This year I am heading to Container Bar and Rutledge Cab Co’s Block Party benefiting I Got Legs. Drinking for a good cause is always a bonus! Container Bar will have $2 Jell-O Shots (dangerous), $8 Spritz, and $4 Michelob Ultra, while Rutledge Cab Co. will have $2 Mimosas, $5 Pain Killers, and $6 Rise & Shine. It will be a great place to celebrate year 6 of finishing the bridge run (hopefully). Hope to see y’all out there and cheers to my fellow runners!
