Charleston Chefs Tackle The Blended Burger Project

When it comes to burgers, everyone has their favorite toppings. My go-to toppings are sauteed mushrooms & onions and a dollop of spicy mustard. I’ve always thought of mushrooms as just a topping for burgers, but I’ve never thought of mixing them in with the meat itself until now. The James Beard Foundation’s Blended Burger Project challenges chefs to create burgers where 25% of the meat mixture is replaced with mushrooms. Before you go panicking about your precious meat being taken away, let me assure you that there is no loss in the taste or texture of these burgers. Not only that, but they are healthier and more sustainable to boot.

Balao: Rooftop Views & All the Seafood

Charlestonians are suckers for two things: seafood and rooftops. Balao is catering to these needs by serving their dynamic menu on a beautiful rooftop deck. Dynamic is almost an understatement, because they change their menu daily to ensure ultimate freshness. It’s so exciting that you could go back to Balao 3 days in a row and have a different experience every time. Now that the weather is warming up, Balao is going to be the new hotspot to enjoy fresh seafood paired with refreshing cocktails.

Millers All Day: Brunch Lovers Rejoice

I am a firm believer that breakfast foods can and should be served at all hours of the day. As Ron Swanson once said: “There is no sadness that cannot be cured by breakfast food.” Charleston is a city that is conducive to getting your breakfast in the late afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays, but few places make it available every day. Enter: Millers All Day. They are serving up breakfast all day every day and also a drink menu that can transfer your Sunday Funday to any day of the week. If you’re a fellow breakfast lover, you have to check this place out.

Shrimp Noodle Bowl with Homemade Ginger Dressing

Now that spring has finally arrived, it’s time to say goodbye to comforting soups and pastas and hello to fresh, bright dishes to get us through the hot Charleston days. For this recipe, I was inspired by a dish that pretty much got me through college, the Saigon Noodle salad from Fire Street Food. Their salad has rice noodles, crunchy cucumbers, grilled chicken, and a sweet and spicy dressing that makes it a light, yet satisfying meal. I don’t live as close to Fire anymore, so I decided I needed to try and make this dish at home, with a few twists of my own. My shrimp noodle bowl is fresh, bright, and perfect for a light lunch.

How to Eat/Drink Your Way Through Savannah in 2 Days

As one of my favorite comedians, Jim Gaffigan, says “vacation is us eating in a place that we’ve never been.” This really resonates with me because whenever I go on vacation, eating is the first priority. Luckily, my fellow foodies/Yelpies are a wealth of information and I was able to get several recommendations on where to go when I spent the weekend in Savannah. The open container laws allow you to wander around while getting drunk and eat at whatever place looks tasty in your drunken stuper. From that sentence alone, you can tell I had a great weekend.

Cocktail of the Week: The Wise Spaniard from Cannon Green

I drive by Cannon Green all the time and always thought it was just a fancy restaurant, but I’m happy to report that they have a killer happy hour! On Tuesdays, they have $5 margs and $2 tacos that change each week, so you get a different experience every time. The rest of the week, they have $3 beer, $5 house wine & well liquor, and $8 specialty cocktails.

Charleston Wine + Food Festival 2018 Recap

For those of you who don’t know, the Charleston Wine + Food festival is 5 days of heaven for foodies and pretty much everyone else. My experience at the Charleston Wine + Food festival was completely unique because I had a different role each day. I worked as an intern for the Culinary Talent team, took photos at 3 events, and attended as a guest on Sunday. Every role I had was as exciting as it was challenging. I learned a lot and ate a lot over these 5 days, so come along with me as I recap it.

The Getaway: Light, Bright Bites and Cocktails

New restaurants are popping up left and right in Charleston, and even though I have barely scratched the surface of visiting the long-established restaurants; one of the new ones usually catches my eye and I have to go check them out (for journalistic purposes). In this case, the Getaway, a Latin American-themed restaurant run by two lady bosses, peaked my interest. They’re answering the call of Charleston locals begging for a break from shrimp and grits and transporting them with bright, authentic cocktails and food from their travels to South America and beyond.  I sat down with the owner Genevieve Mashburn to learn more about the inspiration behind the Getaway and their must-try bites and cocktails.

Review: Feeling 22 at 167 Raw

I took a little hiatus from reviewing, but I’m back and I’m another year older (and hopefully wiser). Last week I turned 22 and I had mixed feelings about it because I feel like 21 is more my aesthetic (and I have to change the header on my website); but I bet 22 will bring exciting things! I started off 22 strong with dinner at 167 Raw, which I’ve been wanting to go to for a while now. It was definitely worth the wait and the seafood was as fresh as advertised.

Cocktail of the Week: “Et Tu, Brute?” from The Gin Joint

If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut of ordering the same drinks when you go out, the master mixologists at the Gin Joint will pull you right out. The Gin Joint parties like it’s 1920 with seasonal, speakeasy-style craft cocktails and bar bites with unique twists. Just looking at the cocktail menu inspired me to order something besides tequila for once, and I’m glad I did.
