Restaurant Week Part 1: Take Me to 5Church

As you can probably guess, Restaurant Week is definitely one of my favorite weeks of the year. I get to try restaurants that I normally would not have the cash flow for, so I treat myself to an elegant evening of eating. For my first restaurant week excursion, I decided 5Church was the move.

decor like no other

5Church is not the address of the restaurant (much to our Uber driver’s dismay), but the restaurant is located inside an old church. They specialize in modern American cuisine, so every dish has a unique twist to it. The inside of the restaurant is as unique as the food that comes out of it. The walls are pasted with writing that looks like it might’ve been done by a serial killer of some sort, but once you get past that the rest of the decor is cool.

a lot of booze for booze

Since Restaurant Week means everyone and their mother would be out and about, Christian and I got a reservation ahead of time. We arrived right on the dot and they told us it would be a few minutes and we should get a drink at the bar. We did wait about 20 minutes for our table, but it all worked out because we got a free drink out of it (pictured above).

To kick off the night, we had some complimentary chips with homemade hummus. You could tell the hummus was very fresh and I enjoyed the kick of lemon flavor I got from it. The deal for Restaurant Week was that we had our choice of 3 courses for $35. The top of the menu teased us with the option of adding wine pairings for an extra $15, so of course we couldn’t resist.

soup-er first course

For the first course, I went with the squash soup with Italian sausage. The soup was rich, creamy, and slightly sweet, which I loved. I just wanted to curl up with this soup and fall asleep on the table, but alas I had wine to drink and food to eat. Christian went for the poke appetizer and it was fresh and spicy. I’m lucky he let me steal a bite away from him.

i got the surf, he got the turf

For our second course, I went with the local fish (Rockfish) and Christian had the pork tenderloin (pictured above). The fish was well cooked and was served alongside a delicious basil pesto and sweet corn. The combination of the fresh pesto, sweet corn, and delicate fish was just perfect. Christian’s pork tenderloin was salty and tender, also served alongside fresh corn. We were both satisfied with our choices and ready to take down dessert.

calling all chocolate lovers: dessert time

For dessert, we both went for the smores trifle because it’s chocolate so end of discussion. The smores trifle was fudgy, marshmallowy, graham crackery deliciousness (all technical terms). This was a chocolate lover’s dream AKA my dream.

We had a great night filled with plenty of wine and great food. The food was matched by the customer service because I could tell the staff really cared about us having a great experience.
